How to Choose the Right Dishwasher Size and Capacity
When choosing the right dishwasher, you should measure carefully, read the capacity info, and choose the features that you will use most. Using this guide, you can find a dishwasher that fits both your kitchen and your culinary needs.
What Size Dishwasher Do I Need?
Dimensions of most home dishwashers fit into the following cabinet openings: 24 inches wide, 24 inches deep, 35 inches tall. Today, many kitchens are built with dishwashers of this size in mind, as this is regarded as a standard dishwasher dimension. KitchenAid offers a wide selection of standard-sized dishwashers that can handle a variety of loads and features to accommodate the dishes you use most.
In many retail locations, dishwasher dimensions are listed according to the size of the cabinet opening. For example, a dishwasher that is 23-½ inches wide may be listed as a 24-inch dishwasher because that is the size opening it requires. When shopping on KitchenAid.ca, you can find the specific dishwasher dimensions in the product details section. If you plan to purchase a new dishwasher, you should check the dimensions against the space that you have.
How To Measure the Cabinet Opening For a Dishwasher
A built-in dishwasher must be completely enclosed on all sides and on its top once installed. In choosing a dishwasher size, you will want to select a unit that will fit into your cabinet opening, but one that fits too snugly may not slide in all the way. It's better to leave a little extra space that can be covered by additional trim if necessary. Follow the dishwasher measuring guide below to select the right size for your kitchen.
Utility connections vary by dishwasher model so make note of the connection location within your cabinet opening to plan ahead when shopping for a new dishwasher.
Step 1: Measuring the width of a dishwasher
- Take measurements between cabinets in the rough opening.
- To ensure accuracy, first measure near the top of the opening, and again near the bottom. If there is any difference, always go with the smaller of the two measurements.
Step 2: Measuring the height of the dishwasher
- Measure the distance from the floor to the lowest point of the countertop.
- Whenever the underside of the countertop appears flat, take two measurements, so you can account for any slight sloping that may affect clearance. First, measure near the back of the opening and then measure again near the front.
- A dishwasher may have adjustable feet that allow the unit to be raised and levelled as necessary.
Note: Measure an empty space instead of guessing this distance with a dishwasher already installed. If new flooring has ever been placed in your kitchen, it may not have been installed underneath the dishwasher. As a result, it is possible the floor under your dishwasher sits lower than your kitchen floors.
STEP 3: Measuring the Depth of a Dishwasher
- Measure the distance from the back of the dishwasher opening to the front edge of your cabinets.
- You should measure along the sides of the cabinets to account for any variation between them.
- If you are considering what size dishwasher to buy or where to install your dishwasher, consider the door clearance. You’ll want the ability to fully open your dishwasher door and slide out the racks while still freely moving around your kitchen as you create and clean. A minimum of 27 inches beyond your cabinets is usually required.
Note: If you are buying a Dishwasher with custom panels, the overall depth may vary depending on the panel.
You should also consider how the placement of handles, towel bars, and dishwasher controls will affect the dimensions and space your new dishwasher will take up in your kitchen. These features won't affect the requirements for rough opening, but they will impact the way you interact with your new appliance. Front control dishwashers provide easy access to the settings and cycles and keep them within reach. Fully integrated dishwashers, or top control dishwashers, hide the controls for an extra sleek appearance. Dishwashers with handles can add a premium touch to your kitchen design but if your dishwasher is installed in a high-traffic area, dishwashers with pocket handles can save space.

HOW BIG SHOULD MY DISHWASHER BE?
Dishwasher dimensions are different from dishwasher capacity. Larger dimensions do not necessarily equate to more dishes fitting inside. Due to the different interior designs of dishwashers, whether it is the number of racks, placement of tines or features that can help handle more dishes within the same dimensions, each machine has its own set of characteristics. When you have determined the dimensions of your dishwasher, look at the capacity and available features of the dishwasher to find one that suits your needs.

The capacity of a dishwasher is measured by its ability to handle a certain number of dishes. The average dishwasher can accommodate between 10 and 12 place settings. As defined by the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers, a single place setting consists of the following items:
Large dinner plate | Small snack plate | Saucer |
Bowl | Coffee cup | Drinking |
Knife | 2 Teaspoons | Dinner fork + Salad fork |

MORE DISHWASHER FEATURES THAT OPTIMIZE CAPACITY
Besides capacity, looking at dishwasher features can help you select a model that feels tailored to your preferences. If you frequently use large or uniquely shaped dishes like tagines, woks, or blender jars, look for options with interiors that are spacious enough to accommodate them. The KitchenAid® 44 dBA Dishwasher with Panel-Ready Design features fold down rows and tines in the lower rack. Three different positions can be adjusted to allow water to clean inside deep or wide dishes. An adjustable middle rack on the KitchenAid® 44 dBA Dishwasher in PrintShield™ Finish with FreeFlex™ Third Rack adds flexibility to fit tall items like a stand mixer bowl. Whether you need to place large dishes inside the rack, or make room for platters, pitchers, blender jars, and other dishes below, the rack can be lowered to suit your needs. This type of flexibility increases the ease of loading for creative cooks.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT DISHWASHER SIZE
