Difference Between Bowl-lift vs Tilt-head Stand Mixer

Shopping for a new KitchenAid® Stand Mixer? Part of the decision will come down to bowl lift vs tilt head and what you think is best for your cooking and baking.

The bowl setup is a big deal. What is the best option for a devoted baker? Is one better for attachments? This guide can help you decide between bowl lift vs tilt head by exploring their differences so you can make an informed decision.

KITCHENAID® BOWL-LIFT VS. TILT-HEAD STAND MIXER

The way you attach and access the bowl is the main difference between tilt-heads and bowl-lifts.

With tilt-head stand mixers, the top of the tilt-head mixer can hinge back, allowing you to twist the bowl onto the base. Bowl-lift stand mixers have a stationary head. You can use a lever to raise and lower the bowl, giving you access to mix or add ingredients.

WHAT IS A TILT-HEAD STAND MIXER?

The KitchenAid® tilt-head stand mixer allows owners to tilt back its head to easily attach the bowl to the base or to swap out the attachments and accessories as needed. It can then be tilted forward to lock in place even while the motor runs. If you want to add ingredients to the bowl, all you have to do is use the lever to release the head and tilt it back.

This lower profile stand mixer is approximately 14 inches (35.5 cm)  tall, meaning it offers easy storage since it can fit under the majority of kitchen cabinets. If you are looking for a more compact model, the mini tilt-head is even shorter at only 12½ inches (31.7 cm) tall.

Tilt-head mixers provide over 19+ colour options—the widest variety on the market—to fit with your style and existing kitchen decor or to add a pop of vibrant colour to your countertops.

The capacity of a KitchenAid® tilt-head stand mixer bowl ranges from 3.5 to 5 quarts  (3.3L - 4.7 L). This means you can whip up a batch of 9 dozen cookies. The mini tilt-head stand mixer features the same range.

Bowls in additional sizes are sold separately.

WHAT IS A KITCHENAID® BOWL-LIFT STAND MIXER?

KitchenAid® bowl-lift stand mixers feature broader bases and stationary heads.

The bowl easily attaches to two arms that can be raised and lowered via a simple lever. Even when the bowl is lowered, ingredients can be added and accessories can be switched. The powerful motor combined with the sturdy design provides an exceptional level of stability, the kind you need to create recipes that call for heavier mixtures.

Bowl-lift mixers come with 5–7-quart (4.73L - 6.6 L) bowls. These bowls let you mix anywhere from 9 to 14 dozen cookies or multiple batches of a recipe at once. Additional bowl sizes are sold separately, such as the 3-quart (2.8L) bowl with whip accessory

At around 16½ inches (41.9 cms) tall, the bowl-lift stand mixer can be stored right on a countertop for easy access. It is available in over 10 colours. Choose your favourite colour to match the look of your kitchen or to add a splash of colour.

BOWL LIFT VS. TILT HEAD: WHAT’S BETTER?

There’s no straightforward answer to this question. It comes down to your cooking needs and style and which best accommodates your favourite recipes while also fitting nicely in your kitchen. While each stand mixer type differs in one way or another, tilt-head and bowl-lift mixers do share some similarities: They both employ planetary action for maximum bowl coverage and have durable, powerful motors.

Both bowl setups feature the same specialized accessories so you can whip, beat, knead and more. They also work with other accessories like the Flex Edge Beaters, which are designed to scrape the bowl while mixing, pouring shields to help prevent spills and bowl covers to store what you make right in the bowl without transferring to tupperware.

Furthermore, both are compatible with all stand mixer power hub attachments2. These help turn your stand mixer into a meat grinder or lets you puree fruits, spiralize vegetables and more.
