A Guide to Wall Ovens:
What To Know When Considering a wall oven
Wall ovens offer exciting design possibilities for any kitchen. Since they’re built into walls, they help free up space usually taken by ranges. This gives you more room for undercounter appliances, cabinetry and adds a feeling of openness to your cooking area.
Here’s what you need to know when considering adding a wall oven to your kitchen.
Wall Oven Overview
Wall ovens and ranges can often share similar features like bake, broil roast, convection baking, convection broiling, convection roasting, meat probes, timers and a delayed start function. WiFi connectivity is becoming more popular in wall ovens, allowing owners to remotely control their appliances through the manufacturer’s app. Remote functions often include start, stop, temperature modifications, cooking notifications and more.
Due to the variety of wall oven features, configurations and heating systems offered in the market it might be difficult choosing the right wall oven to satisfy your cooking needs.
Below are important details to consider when searching for the ideal wall oven.
Thermal Ovens
Thermal ovens, also known as conventional ovens, offer the classic thermal baking system which includes a bake element at the bottom and a broil element at the top of the oven cavity.
Convection Ovens
Convection ovens offer both convection and thermal heat; you can choose to use either one depending on what and how you want to bake or broil. Convection ovens include fans to help more evenly distribute the warm air throughout the oven cavity reducing cooking time and resulting in more even baking.
There Are Two Types of Convection
Fan Convection systems include a fan to help distribute heat evenly throughout the oven, resulting in a more uniform temperature than traditional thermal cooking.
True Convection systems include an additional heating element. This third heating element is behind a fan which ensures that warm air is being distributed throughout the oven so your oven is at a consistent uniform temperature for even cooking.
Most cooking instructions and recipes are written with thermal (conventional) ovens in mind. Some ovens automatically make the conversion. If not, there are resources available online.
Double Wall Ovens
Double wall ovens offer two ovens and a single control panel. Double wall ovens are available in convection or thermal baking systems. The separate upper and lower ovens give you the flexibility to cook several dishes simultaneously at different temperatures.
Single Wall Ovens
Single wall ovens offer one oven and a single control panel. Single wall ovens are available in convection or thermal baking systems.
Combined Wall Ovens
Combination wall ovens come in a stacked suite including a microwave and a convection or thermal oven, with a single control panel. Often, the microwave can also be used as an extra convection oven.
Need a wall oven with the perfect fit? A number of different wall oven sizes are available to best fit your needs.
Wall ovens are most commonly found in 27" and 30” wide dimensions. There are also some lines that feature 24” width wall ovens for smaller-space kitchens. Height varies based on the configuration and brand - singles are generally about 29” high, doubles 51”high, and combinations 42” high. Depth for all units is roughly 23”.
Always check the manufacturer’s specifications for precise measurements as they may vary.
Some wall ovens can be installed flush while others are designed to protrude approximately 1”, commonly called proud installation. In many cases, a flush wall oven will require deeper than standard cabinetry. Some brands may require you to order a flush installation kit. Always remember to consult the installation and dimension guides to plan appropriately.
To help save you space, some wall ovens can be installed under cooktops. Just be sure to check with your manufacturer as this configuration isn’t possible for all brands and models.
To fully understand electrical requirements, parts required for assembly and installation and cabinetry cutout dimensions, it is critical for you and your tradesperson to read and follow the installation guide.

Manual or Standard Clean
Manual or standard clean ovens require physical cleaning by hand. Use of cleaning agents may be necessary to remove stains. Always check and follow your appliance and product use and care instructions before beginning any task, as it should be your primary source of information.
Self-Clean
Self-clean ovens offer features that assists in the oven cleaning process. This includes high-heat self-clean, where the door is locked and the oven cavity heats to approximately 800 °F (400°C), incinerating any spills or food. After it runs, it is necessary to wipe out any remaining food particles – a process that can take between 2 to 6 hours.
Steam Clean
Steam Clean is available in some wall ovens, in addition to high-heat self-clean, and use low heat and add water to create steam to help release residue in the oven cavity in a shorter cycle. Any leftover residue and water must be cleaned manually and may require chemical cleaners.
Steam Clean wall ovens are not available through KitchenAid
