WHAT IS A PROTEIN SHAKE?

Protein shakes are often consumed by people for extra nourishment or as a meal or snack replacement after working out. The protein content can vary per shake and some may also contain carbohydrates and fat. To make a protein shake, you’ll need the following:

  • Blender
  • Protein powder
  • Liquids, like dairy, water or yogurts
  • Fresh ingredients, like fruits and vegetables

BENEFITS OF PROTEIN SHAKES

There are many benefits to drinking protein shakes. Having one post-workout can help build and repair muscles or it can also serve as a sufficient meal substitute, especially if you have to skip breakfast or lunch. These shakes are also the perfect way to use fresh produce from your garden.

THE DIFFERENT TYPES OF PROTEIN USED FOR SHAKES

You can use a variety of ingredients as the base protein in a shake. It comes down to your preferences but popular options include protein powder, milk, fruits, vegetables, nuts or a combination of these that can contribute to a protein-rich shake.

PROTEIN POWDER

There’s a wide selection of protein powder. Let’s review:

  • Whey protein is a popular variety and is derived from milk.
  • Casein is also derived from milk. It differs from whey protein because it can be digested and absorbed more slowly.
  • Other less common forms of protein include  egg-white protein, pea protein and mixed plant protein.

NUTS OR NUT BUTTER

Nuts and nut butters are packed with protein. A few common nuts/nut butters to consider adding to your next shake include:

  • Almonds
  • Peanuts
  • Cashew
  • Walnuts

Keep in mind that nut butters may also contain sugar, so you should weigh the value of protein against adding more sugar to your diet. You can always make your own nut butter to control the nutritional content of your protein shake.

5. ADD LIQUID

Be conservative about the amount of liquid you add at first. Too little or too much liquid could prevent you from achieving the consistency you want.

You can continue adding liquid as needed as you continue blending. The liquid you add is up to you and common options are milk, almond milk, and water.
